Programme overview
The curriculum of the study programme is identical to the one pursued by Czech medical students, apart from being taught in English. It conforms to the European Union standards. The six-year General Medicine programme has also been accredited by the USA, Canada and Malaysia, to name only those countries most students come from. During the first three years of the programme, students have compulsory classes in the Czech language. A good grasp of Czech is required for communication with patients and with colleagues in the wards, such as nurses, who may speak only Czech. The teaching method is traditional and most medical schools in Central Europe are conducted the same way. This study programme is using the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), thus allowing the students to spend part of their studies abroad at our partner universities in Europe. The qualification objectives also include the preparation for post-graduate training and for the needs of the health service.
The first four semesters of the General Medicine study program encompass mostly theoretical subjects (anatomy, biology, biochemistry, biophysics, histology, physiology). Preclinical subjects (pathology, microbiology, pharmacology) are taught in semesters 5-7. Instruction in clinical subjects begins in the following semesters (internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetric and gynecology, neurology) together with subjects connected with public health care (social medicine, medical law). The whole sixth year is devoted to bedside training in internal medicine, surgery, gynaecology and obstetrics. The study is concluded with final state examinations in internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, preventive medicine and pediatrics.
The studies are concluded by the Final State Examinations from Paediatrics, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Gynaecology and Obstetrics, and Epidemiology, Law and Social Medicine.
After the last Final State Examination and Graduation ceremony the students are bestowed an academic degree “Doctor of Medicine” (abbreviated as “MUDr.”).
General Medicine programme has recently received the accreditation from the Association of Medical Schools in Europe (AMSE), which confirms the high quality and European standards of medical studies in Olomouc.
