Doctoral Program: Epidemiology, Preventive Medicine and Hygiene

Guarantor: Prof. MUDr. Dagmar Horáková, Ph.D.

Epidemiology, preventive medicine, and hygiene are scientific disciplines focused on influencing population health. They are inherently preventive in nature and serve as the professional foundation for both preventive and regulatory measures aimed at protecting public health. Epidemiology examines the distribution, causes, and frequency of diseases within human populations. Its methodological approach extends beyond the boundaries of the discipline itself, permeating numerous medical fields through epidemiological studies. It offers broad applicability in the investigation of health-related issues and provides a key foundation for evidence-based medicine.

The aim of the study program is to deepen students’ understanding of epidemiological methodology, enhance their ability to analyze and interpret epidemiological data, and teach them to distinguish between various study designs used in research.

In the field of hygiene, the curriculum emphasizes working conditions and their impact on the health of population groups, including exposure to chemical substances, physical factors, and biological agents.

Another core objective is to foster an understanding of the importance and relevance of preventive medicine, particularly in developed countries, and to explore effective strategies for improving population health through appropriate interventions across all levels of prevention.

Doctoral Program: Public Health

Guarantor: Assoc. Prof. MUDr. Jana Janoutová, Ph.D.

Public health is characterized by its multidisciplinary nature and prioritizes all activities aimed at protecting and improving population health. It gives strong emphasis on health promotion, disease prevention, and the effective organization of healthcare providing.

Public health adopts a population-based approach to health and disease, which is essential for addressing pandemics and other contemporary health challenges. A key objective of the study program is to integrate undergraduate education in public health with scientific research activities.

The field enables independent scholarly engagement within healthcare systems, including the evaluation of preventive measures, the research of social inequalities in access to health, and issues related to the availability and quality of healthcare services.

The curriculum also allows students to focus on the quality of life of individuals affected by disability or chronic illness, as well as on ethical principles and dilemmas arising in clinical practice.

Through the study of public health, students gain a comprehensive understanding of healthcare economics, financial sustainability of health systems, and the limitations of healthcare provision — including in international comparative contexts.

Accredited habilitation and professorship procedures are available in the field of Hygiene, Preventive Medicine, and Epidemiology

Research Activities

The Institute of Public Health is actively engaged in scientific research across a broad spectrum of areas related to population health and healthcare practice.

One line of research focuses on hand hygiene, including quality control and the prevention of pathogen transmission. In collaboration with Olomouc University Hospital, we are conducting a study on the transmission of infectious agents in hospital settings using microbiological swabs.

Another area of research involves participation in a project carried out in cooperation with the Faculty of Physical Culture at Palacký University Olomouc, which explores children's resilience in the context of the digital age. In parallel, we contribute to population-based studies investigating glucose metabolism disorders, with particular emphasis on early detection methods.

A further research stream addresses burnout syndrome among healthcare professionals and the development of effective strategies to support their wellbeing. We also examine the motivations of medical students to pursue a career in medicine, drawing on generational theories, particularly those concerning Generation Z.

The institute is also involved in research on neurodegenerative diseases, with a primary focus on innovative strategies for early diagnosis. Last but not least, we explore the ethics and moral competencies of medical students — a line of inquiry that contributes significantly to the professional development of future physicians and the cultivation of ethical standards in healthcare practice.

Through these activities, the Institute of Public Health consistently bridges theoretical knowledge with the evolving needs of clinical and public health practice.

International Collaboration

ASPHER – Association of Schools of Public Health in the European Region

ASPHER is a key independent European organization dedicated to improving and protecting public health by strengthening education and professional training for public health specialists, both in practice and research.

The primary aim of this collaboration is to support the professionalization of the public health workforce in Europe, while respecting the diversity of national and regional contexts in which each school of public health operates.

The teaching of Public Health at the Faculty of Medicine, Palacký University Olomouc, is aligned with ASPHER’s core competencies for public health professionals.
